'Compatriot' has won Mahtab Soleimani 'The Best First Time Director' at the 9th Amsterdam Film Festival in the Netherlands.
The flick narrates the story of an Afghan asylum-seeker who has left her country as the bells of Russian war tolls in Afghanistan.
She takes her only child and chooses Iran to live in.
The Amsterdam Film Festival was created to award films that have potential to move audiences and change perceptions, and is devoted to filmmakers who are looking for making themselves understood and to communicate, a page on the festival's website reads.
Each year, the Amsterdam Film Festival recognizes excellence in filmmaking in several categories with the prestigious Van Gogh Awards, announced in April every year.
